Our Work

At the Union of Independent Workers, we are fully committed to supporting and representing you, our valued members.

Strengthening Our Community
One of our key priorities is to increase the visibility of independent workers and grow our membership base. We believe that a strong, united community has a more powerful voice. To achieve this, we are continuously working to enhance our financial stability and operational capacity. This allows us to ensure that dedicated staff and volunteers are available to provide personalized support, guidance, and resources whenever you need them. Whether it’s answering your questions, offering advice, or connecting you with relevant services, we are here for you.

Advocating for Your Rights
Beyond member services, our core mission is to champion the rights of independent workers. We actively engage with policymakers, government officials, and other stakeholders to promote fair and equitable working conditions for the self-employed. This means lobbying for policies that recognize the unique challenges faced by independent workers and pushing for improvements in areas such as social protection, taxation, access to benefits, and workplace safety.

Building Partnerships and Raising Awareness
In addition, we work to build strong partnerships with other organizations, industry groups, and public institutions to amplify our impact. We organize events, campaigns, and public discussions aimed at raising awareness about the vital contribution independent workers make to the economy and society.

Below are some examples of current and future projects.

White Paper on structural inequalities facing self‑employed workers

Just before Labour Day, the Union des Indépendants Luxembourg revealed in a white paper ten major structural inequalities that affect self-employed workers in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, calling for the launch of a serious political process on equal treatment, and highlighting 10 immediate priorities.

Despite paying around 25% of their income in social security contributions, they remain systematically less protected than employees and are consistently excluded from fiscal incentives designed to support work and family life.

Plan D

ENTREPREND’ELLES GR

The ENTREPREND’ELLES GR project aims to promote and support sustainable female entrepreneurship in the Greater Region, i.e. entrepreneurship which ensures the long-term success of women who create and run businesses, with a strong focus on Luxembourg, Moselle and Meurthe-et Moselle. It aims to reduce the obstacles that hinder the potential of women entrepreneurs by promoting the exchange of experiences, cross-border networking and the promotion of inspiring models.

The idea of the project came from the observation -supported by academic research- that, despite the progress made in recent decades, female entrepreneurship remains under-represented in the Greater Region. Self-employed women face similar challenges on both sides of the border: limited access to finance, restricted professional networks, difficulties in balancing work and personal life, lack of visibility, self-censorship and socio-cultural stereotypes. In this context, our project aims to act as an accelerator of good practices, as well as a human-scale laboratory promoting innovative solutions.

Structured over 18 months, the project is led by Union des Indépendants, an organisation committed to improving the working conditions of self-employed people, in partnership with EST'Elles Executive, a women's network with more than 15 years of experience in supporting and promoting women entrepreneurs on the French side of the border.

ENTREPREND’ELLES GR is structured around several key actions:

• A cross-border citizen meeting on ‘Sustainable female entrepreneurship in the Greater Region’, organised on 8 March 2027 in Luxembourg to mark International Women's Day. It will bring together female entrepreneurs, researchers and policy makers to discuss obstacles, innovative solutions and strategies for sustaining businesses created by women, while highlighting the diversity of cultural backgrounds, sectoral diversity and the contribution of women to the regional economy.

• The creation of an e-book entitled ‘Advice from experienced women entrepreneurs’: a compilation of stories, practical advice and inspiring testimonials from at least 20 seasoned entrepreneurs (equally divided between the two territories) with at least five years' experience, aimed at women aspiring to become entrepreneurs or in the start-up phase, as well as a wider audience and political actors.

• Two interactive and practical workshops: one on CSR and sustainable value creation in small businesses, the other on the use of AI as a lever for innovation, efficiency and business sustainability. These workshops will focus on the acquisition of concrete tools, exchanges of experiences and best practices between Franco-Luxembourg participants.
